When it comes to my everyday beauty and skin-care routine, I have come to realize that not everything is going to be a quick fix and work the same for everyone. Understanding what type of hair you have and determining what can benefit it long-term can make such a difference. If you’ve noticed some build up, lack of color, or even dry patches or oily spots, this is a sign of impurities in the hair fibers.
Naturally our bodies will speak to us, especially when going through abnormalities. In order to break down what your hair is trying to tell you, we need to fully comprehend the basics like elasticity, density, and porosity, which is the ability to absorb and retain moisture. If you are looking to improve the feeling, look, and strength of your hair, while giving it that glossy shine, you have come to the right place. Here is what you need to know:
- The way you wash your hair and how often matters!
How many days can you actually go without washing your hair? What does it look like on a daily basis? You can always overdo it, so it’s important to notice what is going on during those in-between days. Constantly doing our hair can do more harm than good. The first lather of shampoo will help cleanse the scalp and remove blockage or dirt, while the second round is meant to purify it, working more as a treatment! The way you lather in the shampoo is just as important, so give yourself a gentle massage to improve circulation. A shampoo specifically made to restore your hair, also referred to as a cleansing shampoo, should be used at least once or twice a week.
- Use the right brush for your hair type
As simple as it may seem, choosing the right brush, whether it’s specifically made to detangle your hair or contains soft bristles, can work to improve and help produce the natural healthy oils your hair thrives on. Don’t make the mistake of brushing from root to bottom!
- Nourish Your Scalp (Find out what hair type you have)
No matter your hair type, the use of oils is extremely beneficial since each one has a different purpose to enhance the strength of your hair. Argan oil is a good first choice, due to the fatty acids, and antioxidants it contains to help with protecting your hair from heat, hair smoothness, and the restoration of hydration for a better shine. Shiny hair represents nourished hair; and strong strands start at the root. Set aside time for yourself to create an at-home hair treatment for some extra gloss, using my other oil go-to’s jojoba oil, or even a house staple, some regular olive oil.
- Sleep on a silk pillowcase
Just like picking out different products for your hair can help manage it, choosing a specific pillowcase can do the same. The material matters! Silk fibers prevent the hair from any further breakage and leave the moisture in place, instead of absorbing it all.
P.s. Towels aren’t much better either, since they tend to cause frizz from their coarse consistency. A lot of people are unaware that our towels and cotton pillow cases tend to cause frizz, which is the opposite outcome when switching to silk.
- Use a hair mask weekly
Hair masks differ from hair oils with their restorative properties to repair strands as they carry heavier formulas than standard conditioners. We can benefit from putting on a weekly hair mask which adds deep nourishment and shine. Trust me on this, your hair will love you after adding these little changes.
