Chances are you’ve heard of practicing mindfulness when it comes to your morning routine or meditations. But have you heard of mindful eating?
Mindful eating is a practice of tuning in and paying attention to the experience of eating, both internally and externally. It involves being present in the moment while eating, without judgment, and without distraction.
The goal of mindful eating is to help you become more aware of your thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations related to eating, so that you can make more conscious and healthy choices about what, when, and how much you eat.
Mindful eating is also a beautiful way to get in touch with the present moment. Slowing down and making each part of your day a meditation is incredible for calming the nervous system, reducing stress, and feeling more at peace.
Take your time when you eat, and savor each bite. Try to chew your food slowly and thoroughly, and pay attention to the flavors, textures, and sensations in your mouth. What does it feel like to slow down and be fully present in this moment?
Turn off the TV, put away your phone, and avoid reading or working while you eat. Instead, focus on the act of eating and the people you are with. Get in touch with what is right in front of you.
Pay attention to your body’s signals of hunger and fullness. Eat when you’re hungry, and stop when you’re comfortably full. It’s time to let go of other people’s expectations and opinions and truly get in touch with your body’s wisdom.
Notice how your body responds to different foods. Does a certain food make you feel energized or sluggish? Do you feel satisfied after eating it, or do you still feel hungry? Take note, and make adjustments to your diet accordingly.
Take a moment before you eat to appreciate the food in front of you, and all of the people and processes that brought it to your table. This can help you cultivate a deeper sense of connection to your food and the world around you.
By practicing mindful eating, you can learn to nourish your body and soul with every bite, and develop a more positive relationship with food!
